The light wind ruffles through my hair, and I briefly worry about whether it's going to mess with my hair. Which is a first in a long while. Normally I have it tied up tightly enough that it won't matter.

"You still haven't told me where we're going," I say to Nik.

"I haven't," he agrees.

"If this turns out to be something for the temple..."

He chuckles. "I can assure you it's not. And I wouldn't tell you it wasn't if it was."

"That does make sense," I concede.

He reaches out and takes my hand in his. "Besides, we're here, so you'll find out in about three minutes time."

Matia lets out an excited yip and bounces up the stairs towards what appears to be a banquet house.

I narrow my eyes at him. "What are you up to?"

He gives me a knowing smile and leads me up the stairs and into the hall. Loud shouts come from several of the rooms, but Nik leads me past them and to the one at the end.

He gestures for me to enter, only confusing me more. Matia needs less encouragement than I do and races through the door. If anyone inside knows me, then they'll also know that I've arrived simply from her presence.

I step inside and let out a soft gasp. "What did you do?"

Nik steps up behind me and places a hand on my lower back. "Technically nothing."

"That's not quite true," Neffie says, stepping up and pulling me into a hug. "Hey."

"Hi, Nef. So, what did he do that he's apparently not taking credit for?" I ask.

Nik chuckles. "I messaged and asked for suggestions on what I could do to give you a night where you could be just Ani, and she suggested this."

"If you..."

"It's not for you," he counters quickly. "It's just a banquet where your friends are."

Neffie chuckles. "Menwi just announced that she's getting married, and Tem passed the first level of her apprenticeship, so we thought we should celebrate. And I couldn't resist the idea of Nik and Tressie being in the same room after what you told me about his reaction to her flirting." Amusement dances over my best friend's face.

"Tressie's here?" I ask.

"Everyone is. You should make sure you get some of the food while it's still hot." She gestures for me to follow her over.

"Thank you," I whisper to Nik.

"You're welcome. I hope it helps."

"It does." There's something nice about being in a room full of people who knew me before I was Blessed. Well, other than Nik, I suppose he's only known me afterwards, but he doesn't count.

I head over to where Neffie is and sit down beside her. "How are things at the temple?" I ask her.

"Good," she says. "Though I'm no closer to picking a specialism."

"Is that normal at your stage?"

She shrugs. "Everyone goes at their own pace. And Pedu told me that if I want to be High Priestess someday, then I need to have experience in everything, so I'm focusing on that."

"I'm not sure whether I should be asking you about Pedu or your ambitions first," I joke.
